1. ANTIOCH YEAR ROUND SCHOOLS

2. WHAT SCHOOL WILL MY CHILD ATTEND?
Antioch Year Round Schools
Moving to Antioch is often the first time many people hear about year-round schools. At a first glance many parents and students are resistant to the idea of year-round school. Understanding how the program works should address many of these concerns. The key things to understand about year-round schools are:

  • Your child will be attending the same number of hours of education as they would on a traditional school calendar.

  •
  • Your children will be assigned to the same teacher throughout their study year, just as they would in a traditional schedule.

  •
  • Your student will finish the same amount of academic work in year-round school as they would in a traditional calendar year.

  •
  • Your student will attend school Monday through Friday for three months, then they will have a one-month vacation. This cycle is repeated three times during the year. Your student will still retain the traditional two-week winter vacation, a two-week break at the end of June and all the normal holidays.

  •
  • Families with more than one student are placed on the same schedule (called a track) so vacations and family activities can be coordinated.

  •
Why Was Year-Round School Adopted In Antioch?
A year-round school schedule was set up to accomplish two goals. First, to relieve the overcrowding that was occurring on almost every school campus; and secondly, to qualify Antioch to receive important construction funds from the State of California. Year-round school has been tried successfully in many districts in California and is a practical solution to many problems. Year-round schooling offers the following advantages:
  • Year-round school relieves overcrowding.

  •
  • Less time is spent reviewing material forgotten during a long summer break.

  •
  • Noted decrease in student absenteeism.

  •
  • Increased accessibility to computers, library, playground and cafeterias.

  •
  • Reduction in teacher "burnout" from a continuous nine-month program.

  •
As noted above the student population is divided into four tracks. Since these tracks rotate, only 3/4 of the student population is on campus at a given time. This has allowed the schools to be utilized year-round and reduced many costs to the district.
Your Richland Sales Representative has a copy of the year-round schedule for your review. Or, you can obtain more information by calling the Antioch Unified School District office at (925) 706-4100 .

What school will my child attent?
There may be a school right in the backyard of your new home, and yet your children might well be assigned to a school miles away. Like many districts in the state, Antioch has seen tremendous growth in the last ten years -- faster than the state funding and the City budgets can accommodate. It is not unusual to find many of the Antioch schools at their capacity with enrollment.
While new schools at every grade level are currently either under construction or in planning, in order to meet the dramatic growth children are often assigned to schools other than those in their immediate neighborhood. While this is not as desirable as it would be for children to attend the closest schools, it ultimately benefits them by ensuring adequate teaching resources and minimizing overcrowding.
On January 24, 1996, the Board of Education established new boundaries for school attendance areas. The school district tries to assign students to schools as close to their home as possible. However, until all the new schools are funded and built, many schools in southern Antioch are at or near capacity.
The determination of school attendance boundaries is made by Antioch Unified School District. Students may be assigned to any school with the district. Parents are encouraged to call the Antioch Unified School District Office as soon as they select a new home, to determine which school has space available for their child.
Residents at Black Diamond Heights should anticipate school boundaries to change in the years ahead as new schools are built, and the Board reviews residential growth and school capacities.
The school district also employs a year-round school schedule. This system rotates the student population into the schools and reduces any overcrowding. More information about year round school is available in our sales center.

A great deal of misinformation exists about Mello-Roos tax payments and how they affect the placement of your children. Do not assume that because a home you buy is in a Mello-Roos district, your children will be guaranteed admission to a new neighborhood school. Please check with the school district first!
